Falling Weight Deflectometer: Concrete Pavement Surveys and Joint Performance Evaluation

The Falling Weight Deflectometer is the most common device used for concrete pavement surveys. Although the Falling Weight Deflectometer is identified in DMRB CD 227 as an optional NDT technique, it can yield very informative data as part of a detailed investigation. Requirements for the use of a Falling Weight Deflectometer and recommended arrangements for concrete testing using this device are outlined in DMRB CS 229. In the context of concrete pavements, the primary use of the Falling Weight Deflectometer is for joint performance evaluation and to assess the condition of any formed joints or cracks. The most common outputs include valuable insights into void detection and overall pavement integrity.
