PAVEMENT ASSESSMENT SURVEYS

At Alptest, we specialize in delivering high-quality pavement testing and analysis services across the UK, supporting infrastructure, highway, and transport projects with technical precision and regulatory compliance. Our team combines decades of industry experience with a commitment to engineering excellence, providing a comprehensive range of services including Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) testing, Pavement Coring, Unbound Material Sampling (UMS), Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing, and can arrange laboratory-based material analysis. We operate in full accordance with DMRB standards, ensuring our clients receive reliable, consistent, and auditable data for design validation, asset management, and pavement performance assessment. Whether supporting local authorities, design consultants, or national contractors, we pride ourselves on being responsive, efficient, and professional in every engagement. Our mission is to deliver technically robust, cost-effective solutions that contribute to the long-term durability and safety of the UK’s transport networks. With nationwide coverage, a focus on innovation, and a strong reputation for quality, Alptest is a trusted partner in pavement evaluation and consultancy.

Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD)

FALLING WEIGHT DEFLECTOMETER

Our accredited Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) is a rapid, non-destructive method of assessing the structural integrity of any roads, runways, and other pavements types. Data from out Falling Weight Deflectometer can be used to determine the stiffness pavement structure, the degree of load transfer between adjacent sections and even the presence of voids beneath the surface.

Pavement Coring

Our highly skilled coring crew are set up to core through bituminous and cementitious layers of pavement, able to drill at varying diameters depending on requirements and specification, and to depths of 2m (upon special request). All coring is undertaken in accordance with BS EN 12697-27.

Whilst drilling, using our water suppressing systems, we strive to keep the locations as clean as possible for smooth and safe re-opening of highways.

Post core extraction, our crew is fully equipped to reinstate using HAPAS approved materials.  Utilising the latest GPS technologies, we offer coordinates of each core taken to <0.5m accuracies.

Core samples are then logged in strict accordance with BS EN 12697-36:2003.

Unbound Material Sampling / Windoless Sampling

Unbound Material Sampling / Windoless Sampling

Unbound Material Sampling (UMS) is a field investigation method used to collect representative bulk samples of granular, unbound materials—such as sub-base, capping layers, or road foundation layers—typically from highways, pavements, or construction sites In occordance with BS EN ISO 22475-1

DCP testing is used to gain a greater understanding of the structural integrity of the pavement system. It determines the stability and support of subbase materials beneath bound pavement layers by measuring the penetration rate per each drop of the hammer.

VISUAL CONDITION SURVEYS

Visual assessments of road surfaces are undertaken in accordance with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges CS 229. These condition surveys can help determine areas of pavement that require more attention when planning more intrusive pavement investigations.

All extracted samples, where an asphalt material is present, will undergo PAK marker testing to detect the possible presence of tar.

For further testing we work closely with a network of UKAS accredited laboratories offering a variety of analysis options.
